Telling the Truth

Truth time. Dex gathered his brother into a close embrace, feeling him tremble with tension. “He did call. Several times. I didn’t answer.

I thought it would be better if we didn’t talk to him or see him again.” Trick put both hands on his brother’s face and physically turned him to stare deep into his eyes. “I don’t fucking believe it. Terry called?

And you, in your infinite wisdom, decided it would be better for me not to see or talk to him?”

Shocked, Dex pulled back. “But, you were—”

“I am quite capable even on the verge of depression of deciding whether or not I want to see someone. And Terry, I definitely wanted to see again. I can’t believe you didn’t even tell me he called. What are you, taking lessons from Brandon Blake now?” Ouch. That fucking hurt. “Trick, I love you! You know I would never do anything to hurt you, I just wanted to protect you from what would happen later!”

“Oh? What’s going to happen later, Dex? We find out the man we love loves us? We have a real relationship? Is that what you were really protecting me from? You don’t want to be part of a threesome for real, do you? You want to keep it just the two of us, because that way it’s safe and secure and neither of us risks getting hurt. I understand that, Dex, really I do.” Trick’s voice ran the gamut from loud and furious to soft and soothing.

“I don’t want you to hurt any more, Trick. It tears me up to see you sad and hurting. You are more important to me than anything.” Surely Trick could understand that his intentions had been good?

“I understand that, Dex, I do. I don’t want to see you hurt either, but this is one risk I’m going to take. I want more for us than we’ve been settling for, and with Terry, I think we have a chance to have it all.” Trick’s blue eyes pleaded with him to say yes, that he’d take that risk as well.

“But, what if he finds out about us? About the past, our parents, all the shit that keeps following us around?” Dex couldn’t handle it if they had a real relationship and it fell apart because of the nasty publicity and rumors.

“Dex, honestly! We tell him when we meet him all about our pasts, and let him decide if he thinks he can weather the publicity, if it should arise. We don’t get to make that choice for him any more than his brother Brandon does. And, much as I love you, Brother, I’m in love with him, and I hope he decides we’re worth the risk.” 38
